Damon Albarn - Loneley press play (Everyday Robots, 2014)

When American grunge was moving the Brits to Brit pop, and "Blur or Oasis?" was a relevant question for some, I was listening to Nick Cave, Velvet Underground, the Pogues, Type O Negative and some other music that was completely out of time. I didn't like any of the hip bands then, everything was too hype and too excited and not hung up enough for me. But as it is when you live in one context for quite a while and then suddenly 20, 30 years go by - in retrospect, a lot of things from back then have grown on you. It has retroactively become home, and by that I don't mean a specific place, but everything that accompanied you for a while. I didn't like Blur at all back then. But at some point, probably only after the Gorillaz, I slowly grew to like Damon Albarn, and at some point I could also stand his voice. And when he released his second (if you count Dr. Dee) relaxed solo album in 2014, it played for me for a while. Not on repeat, but again and again. I especially like the first half of the record. The sounds are interesting, but not intrusive. And there is a relaxed basic atmosphere in which his voice fits perfectly. No insider tip, no revolution, but a really nice record for semi-melancholic evenings.

This is one of the tracks on my playlist MELANCHOLICA - linked here
